Jeff & Aimee in the Morning is giving a Hats Off to a California man for stepping into action when they needed him most!
What was supposed to be a family fun day in the sun quickly turned bad for the Whiting family.
They were taking in the beach in Monterey when ten-year-old Hayley Whiting was swept away into deep water by a riptide, according to ABC 30.
“I was thinking this is not happening. There’s no way I’m being pulled out. I was terrified,” said mother Samantha Whitling.
In the midst of the screaming, Kevin Cozzi and his fiancée were close by and Cozzi quickly sprung into action.
“I’ve been swimming since I was three years old competitively, so I felt like I could get to them. I ran out there and as soon as I got to the mom, I knew she was struggling,” said Cozzi.
Thankfully, Cozzi was able to bring Hayley closer to shore where lifeguards could save her.
Months went by and the Whitling family only knew Cozzi’s first name.
However, they never stopped looking for the hero. After posting about the lifesaving story in a Facebook group called ‘Merced Neighborhood Watch,’ Cozzi and the Whitling family were reunited immediately.
The Whitling family is now raising money to help pay for Cozzi and his fiancée’s dream wedding.
Their wedding was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The GoFundMe campaign has reached half of the $50,000 goal.
